Do you want to lose weight? If so, now is the time to incorporate your weight loss goals into your New Year’s resolution. Although many individuals make the resolution to lose weight, you may want to take a different approach. Yes, still have your main goal be weight loss, but create many small, New Year resolutions. When you focus on specific areas of weight loss, instead of just being overweight, you are more likely to see success.
So, what are some good weight loss New Year resolutions?
1 – Eat Healthy
Eating healthy is an easy way to lose weight. In fact, it requires little or no physical effort on your part. Instead of snacking on a package of cookies, opt for a handful of grapes or an apple. Eliminate calorie rich soft drinks from your diet or opt for diet versions instead. Reduce your portion sizes. If this is difficult, start eating with a smaller plate.
2 – Don’t Bring Junk Food into Your Home
Saying you want to eat healthy is fine, but actually doing so is another thing. If you have a weakness for junk food, it is unlikely you will be able to eat healthily if you still have junk food in your home. So, eliminate it. This will take a lot of resilience at the grocery store, but avoid aisles or sections that have your favorite junk foods. If you only have healthy foods in your home, you will have no choice but to eat healthily. So, make one of your New Year resolutions to rid your home of junk food and keep it that way.
3 – Stay Away from Diet Food Aisles
As previously stated, you want to keep junk food out of your home, but you don’t need diet food. Look for foods that are healthy, such as fruits and vegetables. In terms of packaged and processed foods, always opt for those with low calories and low fat. Of course, you can buy diet foods, but know that you are paying more for brand name than anything else.
4 – Exercise
Aside from healthy eating, the next most important component of weight loss is exercise. In terms of exercise, you have many different options. You can go for walks outside, purchase a gym membership, or do exercise videos in the comfort of your own home.
Those who already exercise, but still want to lose weight are encouraged to increase their workouts. Add an extra 15 minutes or opt for workouts that are more intensive.
5 – Walk More
When you walk, you are getting exercise. With that said, it isn’t always referred to as an exercise routine, but that doesn’t mean it can’t become one. If you are looking to lose weight, make one of your mini New Year resolutions to walk more. Park in the back of the car parking lot, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator and walk down the street to the post office instead of driving. The more you walk the more calories you burn.
6 – Get a Workout Buddy
If you are serious about losing weight and have more than 10 pounds to lose, it can be difficult. You will not experience an immediate weight loss. And, when you do lose weight, it can be difficult to keep it off. For that reason, get a workout buddy. This person will be your support. Whether you and your workout buddy exercise together daily or meet weekly for updates, this support can help you turn your New Year resolution into a reality.
7 – Buy an MP3 Player
If you don’t already have an MP3 player, buy one. They are very affordable now. You do not need to have the latest iPod. Instead, opt for a cheap MP3 player.
8 – Use Your MP3 Player
Not only do you want to buy an MP3 player, but use it. One of the many reasons why people stop exercising is because they are bored. Use iTunes or another legal music program to purchase and download your favorite music. Listen to it when working out. Or download hypnosis Mp3s on losing weight or other positive changes you might want to make.
9 – Talk to Your Doctor
If you are overweight or obese, you may fear going to do the doctor. After all, who wants a lecture on the dangers of being overweight? Don’t feel this way. Instead, make the resolution to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. He or she can help you devise the perfect weight loss plan.
10 – Don’t Give Up

Weight Loss Mistake #6: People Don't Set Goals
Accomplishing a feat is always made easier if you set goals and losing weight is no exception to this rule. In fact, if you don't set goals while you are trying to lose weight you are only making things harder on yourself. By setting goals you will get to where you are going much more quickly.
The best thing about setting goals is that you have something to work towards. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds and want to lose weight you should set a target goal. Your goal should not be to simply "lose weight," it should be something similar to losing 30 pounds over the next 10 months. This way you will be able to strive towards your goal, and plan on what you have to do to be successful.
In addition to setting an end goal like the one that is detailed above, you should also set smaller goals that you can try to reach along the way. This may not seem important, but it will help to keep you motivated throughout the entire process.
Playing off of the same example from above, you will want to set smaller goals throughout the 10 months that you have set forward to lose weight. You can do this by breaking up each month separately. So if you want to lose 30 pounds in ten months, you should set a goal of losing three pounds a month. Doesn't that
seem much more attainable?
On top of setting goals, you should also make a reward program up so that you have something to work towards. You can have a smaller reward for each monthly goal that you meet, and then have a large reward at the end of the road. By doing this you
will be able to work through the tough times because you know that there is going to be something in it for you at the end.
This reward will be on top of the ultimate reward of actually losing the weight. Many people leave this step out, but it can definitely be help for those times that you don't think that losing weight is worth it any longer.
Setting goals are a very important part of life. Regardless of what you are trying to accomplish, if you set goals you will have a better chance of staying on track along the sometimes lengthy road to success.
If you want to lose weight you need to set goals. Of course it is not an absolute necessity, but if you do not have goals how do you know when you have reached your target weight?
Overall, setting goals will put you on the right track to realizing your potential and being a success!
